Caput Medusae

Caput Medusae

Tillandsias/Air Plants are incredibly low-maintenance plants. They absorb the majority of their nutrients from the air through their leaves, and are perfect for those with less-than-green-thumbs, or are forgetful when it comes to watering.

The Tillandsia Caput Medusae is named after the Greek goddess Medusa, who had live snakes in place of her hair. This plant was named as such due to its wild looking sage green leaves. The leaves wrap around each other making a tight bulb at the base of the plant, and the leaves seem to reach and stretch as they grow. The leaves are also covered in an incredibly soft flocking.

When in bloom, it will produce a flame red spike and violet colored flowers, and the flower can last up to two months.

The Tillandsia Caput Medusae does not require any soakings, and prefers to be misted 2-3 times a week. Soakings and heavy mistings must be done with care to avoid rotting. As for light and air, it does very well in indirect sunlight and prefers a bit of air circulation. A good indicator of your plant being thirsty is the curvature of its leaves - the Caput Medusaes leaves will begin to curl tightly when it is thirsty.

Native to Central America and Mexico.
